National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela was founded as Regional Engineering College, Rourkela in 1961.

The main objective of the Institute is to produce quality Engineers and Scientists in Graduate and Post-Graduate levels in various branches of Engineering and Science. Life long memories
As a student at the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), I cherish the memories of a vibrant academic and social life. The campus is beautifully located by the coastline, offering stunning views and a serene environment for study. The faculty is highly knowledgeable and supportive, often going the extra mile to help students grasp complex concepts. The variety of clubs and organizations provides numerous opportunities for extracurricular involvement, from technical competitions to cultural events. I particularly enjoyed participating in annual fests, which fostered camaraderie and creativity. However, some challenges exist. The workload can be intense, leading to stress during exam periods. Additionally, while infrastructure is generally good, certain facilities could benefit from upgrades. Despite these issues, the friendships formed and the skills gained during my time at NITK have been invaluable.

Housing services
Large, exclusively student-occupied accommodation, maintained by the university. Residents live in study bedrooms, either alone or sharing with another student. The University, with its beautifully landscaped and carefully tended gardens, provides an ideal environment for a congenial learning experience. Here is a campus that invites students out of their hostels to spend time between classes midst greenery and a riot of floral color.
Library services
Biju Patnaik Central Library (BPCL) of NIT Rourkela, named after the legendary industrialist and statesman, and the founding Chairman of Board of Governors of REC Rourkela, is functioning since 1965. It acts as main learning resource centre of the institute which constitutes robust collections in both print and electronic resources.
Campus life
The campus of the Institute consisting of the Institute buildings, halls of residence and staff colony is situated at the eastern end of Rourkela steel city, beyond Sector-1 over an area of 262 hectares of land provided by the Government of Orissa. It is a residential campus offering accommodation to faculty, staff and students. The campus has all the amenities for developing personal, social and academic skills of the student community.
Sports facilities
The Institute provides its students with world-class sports facilities which include a Football –Hockey stadium named DILIP TIRCKEY STADIUM. It also houses a gymnasium with all the modern facilities. The gymnasium also has 2 instructors to help the students.
Apart from that, we also have the SACHIN TENDULKAR CRICKET GROUND equipped with flood lights. We also have two tennis courts, a basketball court with separate timings for male and female students.Student clubs
NIT Rourkela generates multicultural awareness among students through a variety of events, and enriches their experience of living and studying. As a multicultural organization, we support international students from all the backgrounds. In order to address the interests and needs of the international student body, NIT Rourkela regularly collaborates with governmental bodies, educational providers, student societies and community organizations.
