Science, Struggles & Self-Discovery
I am currently a student of Chemical Engineering at the French-Azerbaijani University (UFAZ), where I study in the French system of education. My university awards dual diplomas with the University of Strasbourg and ASOIU. This system is very challenging, but it has equipped me to learn in Europe. What I liked the most is that the laboratory classes were very engaging, those were the activities that left me, and I later realized my primary interests in experimental work. The academic schedule is very challenging, too: 11–13 subjects in a semester, lectures interspersed with examination periods, as well as long academic hours from half past eight in the morning to five forty-five p.m. with up to four to five lessons a day. Such conditions forced me to develop effective time management skills and perseverance, and I succeeded. What could be sharpened is the rigidity related to the subject of specialization. I, for example, would have preferred different types of specializations, such as more concentrated on laboratory work or field work associated with the industry. In other universities in the region, students do have that flexibility, while we did not. Instead, we needed to cover a wide range of topics even though some content felt redundant or at least irrelevant. All in all, this experience is very challenging, but it is extremely useful and helps one grow especially in the context of international academic and professional pursuits.
