Overview
The Department of Physics and Mathematics at Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, founded in 1926 along with the School and subsequently converted into the Department of Applied Science in 1984 was restructured as the Department of Applied Physics and now as Physics.

General requirements
- Admissions to such programmes is through JAM.
- All candidates admitted through JAM should have a Bachelors’ degree.
- In the qualifying degree, the aggregate marks or cumulative grade point average (CGPA) / CPI (without rounding-off and taking into account all subjects, including languages and subsidiaries, all years combined) should be at least 55% or 5.5 out of 10 for general / OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) category candidates and 50% or 5.0 out of 10 for scheduled castes (SC) / scheduled tribes (ST) and Persons with Disabilities (PwD) category candidates.
- If CGPA / CPI is on a different scale, it would be linearly mapped to a scale on 10. The percentage of marks for letter grades / CGPA obtained by the candidate shall be decided by the Institute.
