Overview
During the first 3 semesters of the AquaCulture, Environment and Society (EMJMD ACES) programme at University of Crete, students will study in a different EU country. To ensure course and group integration, the entire cohort of students will re-locate to different universities and institutes during these semesters. Although students will spend Semester 4 in different locations (of their choice), they will celebrate the end of their studies as an entire group at a final student conference and goodbye event.
Course objectives
The Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree in AquaCulture, Environment and Society + (EMJMD ACES +) has been designed to address the major scientific, technological and social obstactles facing the sustainable development of the global aquaculture industry.
Course Structure
The EMJMD ACES + runs for two years (= four semesters) and involves study periods in four different European countries (UK, Greece, France and the Netherlands) in order to benefit from different welfare models, teaching strengths and the experience of living in different cultures and societies.
Professional and Entrepreneurial Skills
A professional and entrepreneurial skills has developed as an new core module. This is specifically designed to support key skills and competences required by the aquaculture industry.
Assesments
Assessments have been designed to test and develop students’ practical and academic skills. For most modules, assessment will be based on two different types of assignment, one written and one presentation or reflection-based.
Degree Recognition
Successful graduates will receive a Joint Master Degree from the University of the Highlands and Islands and the University of Crete and a Single Degree from the University of Nantes in line with national legislation

Other requirements
General requirements
- Bachelor degree (or equivalent; second class or higher at Honours level) in one of the fields of biological or environmental sciences. An appropriate background could include; aquaculture-related studies, marine science and/or resources, aquatic biology, biology, or environmental sciences linked to the field of marine science and fisheries; and
- For non-UK students, a Secure English Language Test (i.e. IELTS) certificate (applicants must achieve an overall score of 6.5 in this test and a minimum of 6.0 in all four components). Please note, if IELTS test centres in your country remain closed due to COVID-19, then we recommend you take the LanguageCert International Communicator ESOL B2. This test can be done online and you should not be required to do another IELTS test in the event travel bans are lifted or IELTS test centres re-open.
