Transforming Commercial Justice in Nigeria My name is Olawale Femi Isaac. I am a law graduate from the University of Abuja with leadership skills and a strong passion for the justice system. In the complex tapestry of Nigerian society, a lack of legal literacy and limited access to justice form significant barriers to human security and economic stability. My journey toward mastering Business and Commercial Law is deeply rooted in an upbringing in a low-income neighbourhood plagued by the consequences of systemic failure. Witnessing firsthand how broken trust and violated rights erode a community’s potential ignited my passion to become a "game changer" in the legal sector. A critical challenge in my home region is the prevalence of legal illiteracy. Through feasibility studies conducted with partners like the Network of University Legal Aid Institutions (NULAI), it was revealed that less than 30% of community members have a basic knowledge of their legal rights. This deficit leads to widespread marginalisation and inequality. In a commercial context, when individuals lack the education to navigate legal frameworks, they are often excluded from economic opportunities or fall victim to exploitation. My commitment to solving these challenges is evidenced by my academic and field experience. At the University of Abuja, I maintained a CGPA of 4.24, which allowed me to represent my institution in high-level academic competitions. As Deputy Clinic Manager, I led "Team A" in the US Embassy-funded REFORM KUJE PROJECT, which focused on providing access to justice for indigent pretrial detainees. During this period, my team successfully secured the release of inmates by collaborating with pro bono lawyers and stakeholders, proving that structured advocacy can restore hope to the disadvantaged. Furthermore, I organised town hall meetings and seminars that educated over 1,000 community members on their rights, directly reducing the rate of social exclusion in my community. While my foundation is in advocacy and criminal justice reform, an LLM in Business and Commercial Law is the essential tool required to address the underlying social determinants of these issues. This degree will equip me with the technical competency to protect the rights of individuals within the marketplace. By becoming "technologically driven" and gaining firsthand knowledge of international commercial standards, I will help build a robust legal infrastructure in Nigeria that prevents the frustrations of poverty from manifesting as crime. My goal is to become a stronghold in providing solutions to Nigeria’s legal challenges, ensuring that every citizen, regardless of their background, can participate in a fair and secure economic system.
