History
Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica (MBU) was established on 1 July 1992 by the Slovak National Council Act No.139/1992 Coll. as of 27 February 1992 by merging the University of Economics and Tourism in Banská Bystrica and the Faculty of Education in Banská Bystrica.

- Faculty of Law
- Faculty of Natural Sciences
Research
Research priorities at the UMB have been defined on the basis of the UMB Action Plan 2015-2020 as well as on national research priorities and Horizon 2020. The university has six faculties, five of them focus on SSH (socio-economic sciences, humanities, educational sciences, political sciences and law); one faculty is natural science oriented. In recent years a multidisciplinary approach and interfaculty collaboration have been strenghtened. Internationalisation of research is an essential element of most research projects. The UMB has been successful in FP7 and H2020 particularly in SSH fields and has an ambition to be the best Slovak university in the SSH international research collaboration.

University in heart of Slovakia - UMB
My university is located in the middle of the country, Slovakia. It is an old university with a historical buildings, the university consists of different faculties - Faculty of Arts Faculty of Economics Faculty of Education Faculty of Law Faculty of Natural Sciences Faculty of physical education, sports and health UMB Faculty of Political Science and International Relations I like to study in my faculty - Economics. But of course, there are many things to be improved. More contacts with the employers and companies, more prax experiences provided. But in the end, I am very satisfied with my choice.

University UMB: Learning and Opportunities
I personally enjoy studying at my university. In the last two years, I have met a lot of interesting people, including professors who have deep knowledge and a lot of practical experience. After I enrolled at this institution, the curriculum for my major changed. More practical subjects were added to the program. Now, it is focused more on things like software engineering than just Computer Science. The only thing I am not satisfied with is the lack of job and internship opportunities. The city where my university is located is pretty small, and there are not many big companies that offer interesting jobs and internships for students.

Library services
The establishment of the University Library of the Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica is related to the establishment of the Higher Pedagogical School in Banská Bystrica in 1954. After the establishment of the Faculty of Pedagogy in 1964, it became its central library.

The field of studies system in higher education of the Slovak Republic issued by the Ministry of Education no. 2090/2002 entered into force on 16th December 2002. The field of studies system is administered by the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic.
