History
Incorporated as an independent higher education institution in 1989, the University's origins can be traced back to a private School of Art founded in 1856. Mergers between Southampton College of Art, the College of Technology and the College of Nautical Studies at Warsash laid the foundations for what is now Solent University.

Research
Research at Solent covers a number of distinctive areas relating to the creative and digital industries; business and society; sport, health and wellbeing; and maritime, technology and the environment.

The University has many positives
As an international student, the university is a great place where we feel heard, implicated and supported. People are nice overall and the Student Union do their best to make as much social events as they can to make the student life more inclusive and fun, no matter the ethnicity, genre, love orientation, etc. My classes are quite interesting and my lecturers this year are all nice as well, but some of them may lack understanding towards some situations (e.g. not being able to attend some classes due to work). I wish my classes include more practical sessions on campus so it'd be great to build our portfolio at the same time.
Commute‑friendly city campus
Good campus overall - like it here, most staff are friendly and students are great. My course is good as well and I enjoy coming into campus, as I commute in. It's definitely worth coming to an open day and checking it out for yourself.
No title
Great experience studying here, with some minor hiccups along the way, but generally would like to study here again. Lecturers are knowledgeable, helpful and the staff and facilities on campus really help the overall feeling of the university.

Housing services
Student accommodation is more than just a roof over your head – the place you live can have a real impact on how well you settle into university life. With six halls of residence and established links with the private rental sector, our dedicated accommodation service are here to make sure that every Solent student is happy and safe within their home.
Library services
Our Mountbatten Library hosts a dedicated law collection, plus an excellent collection of subscriber law databases giving access both on and off campus.
ICT services
StudentCom is the exclusive provider of broadband services in Solent University student residences. You will register for your internet service before you move into your student residence via the student residences online induction. This will take place once you have received the offer of a room in residences.
Medical services
Your health is your responsibility. The management and staff of this organisation are dedicated to helping you take every opportunity to enjoy the facilities that we offer. With this in mind, we have carefully considered what we can reasonably expect of each other.

Situated right in the centre of the busy city of Southampton, the Solent University campus is home to students and staff from many different backgrounds and nationalities.
Of course, being in the city centre means that many amenities are just a few minutes' walk from the lecture room, but as well as exploring Southampton, take some time to discover what's available to you right here on campus.

Here at Solent University, we want our students to enjoy their time while they're studying and feel a part of the Solent student community. If you need it, you'll be able to find lots of advice on everything from academic and personal matters, to study skills and careers guidance.
Sports facilities
- Test Park
Our multi-million pound Test Park sports ground supports a wide range of outdoor sporting activities for the University, and the local community.
- East Park Terrace
Available to staff, students and the general public, our multi purpose sports hall can cater for most sports.
- New Sports Complex
Part of an ongoing £100 million estates development will be home to a range of state-of-the-art sports facilities.
Student clubs
Solent Students' Union is run by you! Yes, that's right, you have all the power when it comes to the Students' Union. You elect representatives who offer academic representation, campaign on your behalf, and represent your views to University management.
But the SU is more than just elections! You can join societies or even start a new one for yourself if you can't find what you're looking for. Societies range from SONAR Media, who run a radio station, magazine and cinema (all of which you can be involved with), to arts and crafts!
Accreditation
Solent University is fully accredited by Creative Skillset for a range of courses including broadcast technology, animation, game design and media technology. This accreditation is saved for institutions offering training on the cutting-edge of media technology.
