Interdisciplinary and new concept
As this course of study is newly established at the Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz, it does have some kinks to be ironed out, first and foremost. In general, the concept is good, the aim of it being to give students an overview and the odd deeper look into life sciences. When somebody asks me what I can do after completing my Bachelor thesis, I always have to answer: "Just about anything." As it is very general but still has the ambition to give deep insights into some topics as is to be expected from a University course, it does feel very crammed in places. The pacing is mostly okay, but still kind of overwhelming at times. My conclusion after almost completing studying this course would be: Decent curriculum, interesting modules, sometimes strange pacing. It definitely takes effort and time. If you are interested in interdisciplinary life sciences, this course of study might be for you. Just as an add on, Mainz as a location to live in as a student is brilliant; it is a beautiful city with many opportunities to spend time there, whether alone or with others. I strongly recommend visiting in general.
Biotechnology for Tomorrow's Challenges
The Department of Molecular Biotechnology is a program that combines the fundamental science of Biology with engineering. In our educational process, alongside courses such as Immunology, Microbiology, and Cell Biology, we also have technical courses like Artificial Intelligence and Bioinformatics. In these courses, we learn programming languages such as R, Python, and Matlab, as well as various artificial intelligence algorithms. My future goals include working in the field of tissue engineering. I believe that the curriculum of our university is prepared in line with the requirements of our era, so I consider the education I receive to be sufficient to work in my field.
