Overview

A master’s degree in Creative Writing is ideal for those who have a passion for creative writing and wish to develop their talent as well as those who wish to apply to MFA or PhD programs, publish their work, enter the job market, teach at the community college level, or meet the general needs of elementary and secondary teachers who wish to upgrade their capabilities.

You'll work to complete an exit portfolio consisting of your strongest short stories, novel excerpts, poems, creative nonfiction essays, or a combination of these genres. You'll work closely with award-winning faculty, make connections with prominent authors, and build lifelong friendships with your peers.

A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution

Along with the application, you’ll need to submit a $50 application fee

Submit a copy of your passport

Submit proof of English proficiency or your intent to study English upon arrival – unless you are from an exempted country where English is the primary language of instruction.

You also may demonstrate English proficiency by completing the English studies program through CMU's English Language Institute.
