About the Program

The Classics program of the University of Oregon prepares students for further training in Classics and related disciplines at the PhD level, for being teachers of Latin in schools, and for various other careers. Our students have recently been accepted into top-tier doctoral programs in Classics, such as those of UC Berkeley, UCLA, Johns Hopkins, NYU, UT Austin, and the University of Washington. Furthermore, recent graduates from our department have done very well at finding jobs teaching Latin in schools. The department considers helping students move on to their next educational and/or vocational goal to be a priority.

The M.A. degree, however, should not be considered only as a degree that provides vocational training. The degree provides students with a deep knowledge of the Greek and Roman cultures and with a deep knowledge of the continued relevance of these cultures to the contemporary world.

The M.A. degree is completed partially through course work and partially through writing a thesis, completing translation exams, or by submitting a portfolio of research papers. In addition, students must exhibit competency in French, German, or Italian.

Programs of study are arranged in consultation with two advisers, at least one of whom is a member of the Department of Classics. Programs of study are composed from graduate courses in Latin, Greek, Classics, History, Art History, Religion, Philosophy, and English.
