Community health and social justice influence each other. Social determinants of health, such as poverty, education, racism, and access to healthcare, can greatly affect health outcomes and disparities. Addressing these factors is crucial for improving health equity. Conversely, addressing community health issues can also help to address social injustices, as healthier individuals and communities are better able to participate in and advocate for social change.

Graduates of the Community Health and Social Justice at the University of Washington Bothell will be equipped to address the impacts of structural and institutional racism, and other forms of discrimination which have produced inequities in the United States putting into practice theories, strategies, and tools to promote community health and social justice such as creating, implementing, and evaluating culturally relevant health interventions, which include educational resources, programs, and communication campaigns;

Upon completion of the program, students are able to…

Apply multidisciplinary approaches and tools to address health determinants, disparities, and injustices.
Understand, evaluate, and deploy social justice theories, practices, and policies that shift systems of inequities in communities and develop strategies to disrupt oppressive systems and injustice.
Engage in reflective praxis grounded in an equity and intersectionality lens to recognize how issues of equity, diversity, anti-bias inclusion must be embedded explicitly and implicitly in community health interventions and participatory research.
Develop leadership skills that value and lift all voices in communities, particularly those of historically and currently marginalized groups.
Identify processes needed to improve health outcomes and systems through planning, implementation, and evaluation of health programs for individuals and communities using a social justice framework.

Career and credentialing opportunities

Graduate prepared to work in a variety of fields and settings in the public and private sectors regionally, nationally and globally ready to meet the critical need for health professionals. With the advanced knowledge and applicable skills gained in this program, graduates are equipped to dismantle racism, promote social justice, build capacity for health equity and develop culturally relevant health programming for just and equitable solutions. Graduates are eligible to sit for the Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES), Master Certified Health Education Specialist and Certified Public Health (CPH) exam.

General requirements

A Bachelor’s degree or higher in any discipline from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or its equivalent from outside the U.S. Applicants may apply with their bachelor’s degree in progress.
At least a 3.0 grade point average on a 4-point scale (or equivalent measures of performance if a graduate of an institution with no grading system) for those credits earned at the institution awarding the bachelor’s degree OR at least a 3.0 grade point average (on a 4 point scale) for the last 90 graded quarter credits or 60 graded semester credits. Applicants not meeting the GPA requirement may still apply and will be reviewed on a case-by-case in accordance with the Graduate School Alternate Standards Policy 3.1.2.
English language proficiency. Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency (see Graduate School English Proficiency Policy 3.2).
