Basic Degree Information/Description
This clinical program emphasizes creativity, diversity, developmental and relational processes, ethics, and professional identity within Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Students may earn credit toward a state license and/or certification to practice in clinical settings (i.e., Licensed Professional Counselor, etc.). The Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
The Clinical Mental Health Counseling program of The University of Texas at San Antonio is designed for students who wish to become mental health counselors and meet the curricular requirements for state of Texas counselor licensure (Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC). This program requires 60 semester hours that includes 700 hours of practicum and internship.

General requirements
- An undergraduate degree in Education, Psychology or Sociology is required
- Students not meeting this requirement will need to have 18 semester hours of leveling courses in either, psychology, sociology, education or a closely related field
- Applicants without adequate coursework preparation in Education, Psychology, Sociology or a related field may be required to take Helping Skills and, at the discretion of the admissions committee, to complete up to 15 additional hours of preparatory courses as a condition of admission
- A completed a Graduate School application
- Official transcripts from all institutions attended. All international transcripts must be recorded in English or officially translated to English along with an evaluation of the transcripts from Foreign Credentials Service of America
- Three Applicant Rating Forms are required
- A two-page narrative statement is required
- English language proficiency test scores
