Basic Degree Information/Description
A thesis option is available for students who wish to have research experience. Two concentrations are available including Computer and Information Security and Software Engineering.
Why pursue an M.S. in Computer Science?
- The Department of Computer Science offers comprehensive programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels, with approximately 400 undergraduates, 80 M.S. students and 70 Ph.D. students.
- The Computer Science program of The University of Texas at San Antonio offers optional concentrations in Software Engineering and in Computer and Information Security.
- The Master's degree program offers thesis and non-thesis options that allow students to gain valuable experiences in cutting-edge research. The research activities and experimental facilities have been well-supported by various federal research and infrastructure grants.
Career Options Available for a Computer Science Graduate:
- Our M.S. graduates are working in various industrial positions at companies such as AT&T, USAA, Microsoft, Oracle, and Intel.
- Some of our M.S. graduates have been admitted to Ph.D. Degree programs at UTSA and other universities including UT Austin and Texas A&M.

General requirements
- Applicants should have a Bachelor's degree in computer science equivalent to that offered at UTSA
- A completed a Graduate School application
- Official transcripts from all institutions attended. All international transcripts must be recorded in English or officially translated to English along with an evaluation of the transcripts from Foreign Credentials Service of America
- English language proficiency test scores
- Students are encouraged to submit a copy of curriculum vita, a statement of purpose, and two letters of reference, if the student has accumulated extensive work experience and additional qualifications beyond the transcripts submitted. If the student wants to be considered for a teaching assistantship, the statement of purpose and the letters of reference should provide information about the student's ability and teaching experience.
