Basic Degree Information/Description
The English program of The University of Texas at San Antonio enables students to advance in the field of English by studying various approaches to diverse literatures, preparing to teach literature and writing, and developing the intellectual and critical skills necessary for professional advancement. The program provides a firm foundation for further study at the doctoral level and it offers a model of study that prepares students for the twenty-first century challenges of cultural diversity.

General requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in English or a related discipline
- A minimum of at least 18 semester credit hours of work (exclusive of freshman courses) in English with a grade point average of 3.3 (on a 4.0 scale) in all work taken in English at the upper-division and graduate levels. This work must include at least 12 semester credit hours of upper-division English literature courses, and the student must have a grade point average of 3.3 in these courses
- A completed a Graduate School application
- Official transcripts from all institutions attended. All international transcripts must be recorded in English or officially translated to English along with an evaluation of the transcripts from Foreign Credentials Service of America
- If applying for Departmental Financial Aid, three letters of recommendation are required
- General GRE, not older than five years old
- English language proficiency test scores
