Overview

In this 60-semester-hour degree program, students take classes in Drama-in-Education, Theatre for Youth, Theatre-in-Education, puppetry, and directing. Additional electives ensure the program engage with each student’s area of interest. Professional guest artists engage in residencies each year, bringing multiple perspectives to the curriculum.

The program is highly competitive, accepting only two students every other year. To gain acceptance into the program, students must first be admitted to the Graduate School at University of North Carolina Greensboro. Students are required to interview and submit a portfolio that may include promptbooks, production photos, directorial position papers, dramaturgical research, outreach guides, lesson plans, and/or a record of their theatre for youth experience.

MFA Curriculum

During their course of study, students are expected to participate in campus productions through the North Carolina Theatre for Young People (NCTYP) production series. Internships are also encouraged, usually during summer months, and are arranged in consultation with the advisor. The School of Theatre encourages approved work outside the University and has partnerships with Triad Stage, a professional regional theatre located in downtown Greensboro. NCTYP also prepares students to attend regional and national competitions, symposia, and conferences.
