Overview
Key facts
The Master of Science (M.S.) degree in Mathematics at Montana State University is designed to prepare students for further graduate work or for a career in academia, business, industry, or government.
The department offers thesis and non-thesis options. Both options require a core of mathematical coursework consisting of real analysis, advanced linear algebra, abstract algebra, and topology. For the remainder of their coursework, students may choose from a broad variety of topics depending on their area of interest. Topics include algebraic topology, applied mathematics, complex analysis, computational mathematics, dynamical systems, machine learning, mathematical biology, and optimization. To complete the degree in two years, a student typically takes six credits of coursework for each of the first two semesters and nine credits of coursework for each of the remaining two semesters. Funding
All students who meet the minimum application requirements are eligible to be considered for a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA). We assume all applicants are interested in a GTA unless they make note of it in their application. Decisions regarding GTA support are separate from admission decisions and are based on the availability of department resources.
GTA positions typically cover 6-9 credits of out-of-state tuition, along with a biweekly stipend to support graduate students. Fees and housing are not included in GTA positions.
Other internal and external funding options are also available.
