Overview

The Philosophy Department is a member of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Georgia. In addition to a full undergraduate program leading to an A.B., we offer both a terminal M.A. and Ph.D. The department also participates in three interdisciplinary programs, is home to an academic journal, and conducts an active colloquium series.

The department offers a comprehensive program, covering the major areas of philosophical study, leading to the MA and the PhD degrees. Various approaches, including historical studies, linguistic analysis, logical analysis, and phenomenology are represented by the faculty.

The Philosophy program at the University of Georgia is designed to give broad and thorough training in these basic areas of philosophy, as well as the opportunity for special study in the area of specialization of interest to the student.

Admission to the PhD program presupposes a thorough background in the history of philosophy. Restricted admission encourages close student-faculty relationships. Preparation for teaching is considered an integral part of the PhD program.

Statement of purpose—a 500–1000 word statement, explaining which areas of philosophy you wish to pursue and why you wish to pursue them
