Program Overview

The M.A. Art History program offered by the Ohio University includes a sequence of Art History courses and seminars at the advanced level, directed electives, and proof of reading competency. Upon entry to the art history program, a student will be assigned an advisor in the area. By the end of the third week of the second year, a thesis proposal will be submitted to the student’s thesis committee, leading to the completion of a 40 credit-hour degree.

Careers

After completing the master’s program at Ohio University, students are prepared to enter programs in doctoral studies or to seek career paths in fields related to art history. Many former students are currently directors of galleries and museums and professors and deans of Fine Arts schools.

General requirements

Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent: Admission requires an earned bachelor's degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association, or an international degree that is equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree from a college or university recognized and approved by the Ministry of Education or Commission responsible for higher education in the country where the degree is earned.
Official transcripts: Applicants are required to submit one official transcript from each post-secondary institution attended, regardless of whether or not a degree was earned or the credits are reflected on a separate transcript as transfer credit.
Letters of recommendation. Applicants must submit three letters of recommendation.
Statement of Purpose: Applicants must submit a two-page statement of purpose.
Resume or Curriculum Vita: This should also be treated as one of the most important items in your application package.
