Overview
Students can specialize in one subfield of politics — political theory, comparative politics, global politics, or American politics — or they can gain a broader understanding of the field by taking courses in multiple fields.
Students of MA in Politics from The New School work closely with a faculty advisor, especially on the final MA paper. They take courses with PhD students in the department and participate in the rich intellectual life of the department and NSSR. The degree prepares them for PhD study in the field or for careers in policymaking, activism, NGOs, law, and beyond.
Continuation to a PhD
Students in the Politics MA program can apply to enter the PhD program after completing 18 credits at The New School for Social Research and should apply by the time they have completed 27 credits.
Programme Structure
Politics Courses:
Students will take at least six courses (18 credits) and up to nine courses in the Politics department. They can focus on a particular subfield or theme or range widely. Courses offered by other departments of The New School for Social Research that are cross-listed in Politics may be used to meet the 18 required Politics credits. One of these courses must be a course in qualitative or quantitative methods.
- Many cross-listed courses do have prerequisites. The course instructor and the chair of the department or committee offering a course will determine whether a Politics student meets the prerequisites and can be admitted to the course in question. Courses that are not cross-listed in Politics may only be taken as electives (see below), unless by special permission of the Politics department.
