Overview

Our graduate Biomedical Engineering program at the University of Memphis is a collaboration with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC).

We offer three graduate degrees in BME: MS degree with project, MS degree with thesis, and PhD with doctoral dissertation. Students can choose to work in the areas of Biosensors, Biomechanics, Bioelectricity, and Biomaterials.

Biomedical Engineers work in industry, in hospitals, and in research labs of government, academic, and industrial institutions. They may also become part of the regulatory function in government.

Our program has a strong record of job placement after graduation. Approximately 54% of our students are now working in industry and 27% have continued on to with a graduate degree programs.

General requirements

An appropriate bachelor’s degree (biomedical, chemical, electrical, mechanical, or others as defined by the Joint Program)

An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00 from an accredited college or university

It is recommended to obtain a GRE score above 300 (combined verbal reasoning and quantitative reasoning) including a minimum 154 on the quantitative reasoning

Applicants whose native language is not English and who have not earned a degree from a college or university in an English-speaking country must have achieved a TOEFL score of at least 213/79 on the computerbased/Internetbased exam or an IELTS score of 6.5 (earned within 2 years prior to application). Any applicant whose first language is not English but who has earned a baccalaureate or master’s degree from a college or university in an English-speaking country where instruction was in English may be exempted from the requirement for the TOEFL or IELTS examination.
