Key facts

Each year the department admits a small number of undergraduates to the coterminal M.A. degree in French. The program is offered at Stanford University. Applications for Autumn quarter must be submitted by January 31 of the senior year to the Director of the Department and must include:

a written statement of purpose

two letters of recommendation from faculty at Stanford

a transcript.

Candidates must complete a minimum of 45 units of graduate work, all courses being taken for a letter grade, with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.3, as well as pass the master's examination at the end of their studies. To fulfill the requirements in a single year, enrollment must be for an average of 15 units per quarter.

Students accepted into the coterminal program must have been undergraduate majors in French and must meet all requirements both for the B.A. and the M.A.

The terminal M.A. in French provides a flexible combination of language, literature, cultural history, and methodology course work designed to enhance the preparation of secondary school, junior college, or college teachers.

Applicants must hold, or expect to hold before enrollment at Stanford, a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association.
Applicants from institutions outside the U.S. must hold the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing. See minimum level of study required of International applicants.
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) scores are required of all applicants whose first language is not English.
International students enrolled must be able to read English with ease, understand rapid idiomatic English as used in lectures and group discussions.
