Overview
The sole course common to all Master's students is ENG 826 Approaches to Literature, which is a survey of the main approaches to literary study and their practical application.
The remaining 27 elective hours are chosen from courses in the following areas:
- American, British, world, and comparative literature
- period studies
- thematic studies
- genre studies
- regional studies
- major authors
- criticism
- linguistics
- modern grammar
- rhetoric and composition
- creative writing and
- pedagogy.
At the end of your English program from Fort Hays State University, you will write a four-hour graduate examination based on limited reading lists in three of five possible subject areas, according to your interests. Career
Some of our English majors earn licensure to teach in middle school and high school.
Others bring their liberal arts training and ability to write, interpret, and present information to such fields as management, sales, public relations, advertising, technical writing, publishing, media and communication, and government service.

General requirements
- Submit an Application for Graduate Admission at the appropriate website.
- Pay the $40 domestic application fee or $50 international application fee.
- Provide the Graduate School with an official bachelor's degree transcript and master's degree transcript (if applicable) from a regionally accredited institution.
- For institutions outside the United States and Canada, a World Education Service (WES) International Course-by-Course Transcript Evaluation is required for translation.
- 2 letters of recommendation, a personal statement and a 3.0 GPA in a minimum of 18 hours of English courses beyond the general studies composition courses
- International students must provide evidence of their ability to speak English.
