Overview

The School's view of program concentrations is based on the idea that rapidly changing policies, emerging evidence-based practices, and dramatic changes in service delivery patterns and structures require a graduate to be well-grounded in the methodologies of change as well as the contexts of practice.

The curriculum builds on the generalist foundation curriculum and provides students the choice of four practice method concentration areas (interpersonal practice, community organization, management in the human services, and social policy and evaluation).

Students also select one of five practice areas (aging in families and society, children and youth in families and society, community and social systems, health, and mental health) in which to apply their chosen practice method. The Master in Social Work is taught at the University of Michigan.

Key Facts

The practice method concentration focuses on theories and interventions related to practice with individuals, families, groups, organizations, communities, and/or society. And the practice area provides an opportunity to apply the practice method, focusing on selected contexts and domains of practice, with particular attention given to specific policies, procedures, and practices.

Together, the practice method concentration and practice area serve to broaden and deepen foundation knowledge and skills, and enhance the specialized skills needed for students to know the how and why of their interventions.

University of Michigan students complete six credit hours in their practice method concentration. Students complete nine credit hours of coursework in their practice area. In addition, all students are required to complete Evaluation in Social Work (SW 683).
