As both a STEM program and the only accredited M.Arch program in the state, we provide foundational knowledge and skills for students who wish to gain licensure while empowering them to be future leaders in the profession.
The Architecture program of the University of Minnesota strives to teach design excellence while concurrently exploring architecture as a cultural and research-based practice that engages broader societal issues.
Program Details
- Our rigorous three-year curriculum covers the breadth of foundational knowledge required to become a professional architect, while embracing complex and urgent issues involving globalization, climate change, social equity, and new technologies.
- Our core curriculum synthesizes building technology and structures, critical representation, professional practice, environmental technologies, history, and theory with design.
- Elective courses broaden and deepen this foundational knowledge.
- Through the promotion of design exploration and independent thinking, we provide a strong base for a creative and meaningful professional life.

General requirements
To pursue an M.Arch you must have a bachelor’s degree in arts, humanities, sciences, environmental studies, or engineering is required, and a GPA greater than 3.0 is preferred. International applicants must be proficient in English (see application materials)

Unofficial transcripts of all college or university coursework.
Two brief essays, each no more than 500 words, written in response to two of the following three options:
- Option 1: Write about a formative personal experience that helped to inspire your interest in pursuing the professional study of architecture and the built environment.
- Option 2: Describe a place that is meaningful and state why you find it meaningful.
- Option 3: Describe an object (at any scale) that you find sublime, grotesque, or culturally significant and state why.
