Whether your dream is to share your personal story as a memoir, to write a fantasy novel, or to create a lyrical collection of poetry, the low-residency Creative Writing program at Saint Leo University can take your creativity and professionalism to the next level within a supportive community of peers and mentors.

Key Features

The low-residency format provides extreme flexibility for working adults, active-duty military members, veterans, and parents, meaning that you can pursue your writing goals online without interrupting your existing commitments to career, community, and family.

You’ll spend one week each summer in an intensive residency, located at our beautiful university campus here in Saint Leo, Florida. Because the residency is scheduled to minimize its impact on student lives by beginning and ending on the weekend, it’s possible to enroll in the graduate program and spend just five business days away from home each year.

You’ll then return home energized and inspired to work on your own creative project and enroll in semester online courses taught by members of our core faculty, all of whom are published writers of national reputation.

Designed to be completed in just two calendar years, this 36-hour master’s degree requires three summer residencies, four semesters of study, and a book-length thesis of the student’s creative work.

General requirements

A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university, with a minimum GPA of 3.25 on a 4-point scale.

Submit official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions previously attended. Graduates or former students of Saint Leo University do not need to submit their Saint Leo University transcripts.

A 10-25 page sample of the applicant’s original creative work, in the genre in which the student wishes to specialize (Fiction, Nonfiction, or Poetry). This document should have 1-inch margins on all four sides of the page. All manuscripts should be in a serif font, in 12-point type. Some good examples are Times New Roman, Garamond, and Cochin. Prose manuscripts must be double-spaced, and poetry manuscripts must begin a new poem on a new page.
