Key facts

The Mercer University Athletic Training Program is full-time and spans six consecutive semesters with classroom-based instruction coupled with clinical laboratory courses and clinical experiences.

Mercer Athletic Training students are led by a distinguished faculty of athletic trainers and receive clinincal instruction from trained preceptors in a variety of clinical settings.

Program Goals

The Master of Athletic Training Program will:

Recruit, admit, and retain highly qualified applicants who are committed to a career in athletic training.
Support faculty development and engagement in teaching, scholarship, and service.
Deliver a comprehensive curriculum that provides students with knowledge, skills and clinical abilities included in content areas of foundational knowledge; core competencies; patient/client care; prevention, health promotion, and wellness; and healthcare administration.
Provide clinical education experiences that encompass the scope of athletic training practice.
Support state-of-the-art technology and facilities to deliver the curriculum.
Secure/maintain accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE).

Student Learning Outcomes

The Mercer University Athletic Training Graduate will:

Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and clinical abilities that will prepare her/him for entry-level practice as an athletic trainer.
Use patient/client values and circumstances, clinical expertise, and research to guide clinical-decision making.
Adhere to professional and ethical standards of conduct in compliance with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) and to the laws and guidelines that regulate the practice of athletic training.
Collaborate effectively as a member and leader of an interprofessional healthcare team to provide evidence-based and patient-centered care.
Pursue professional development through continuing education and active involvement with the NATA.

General requirements

A completed application that includes a personal statement and two essays.
Documentation of at least 50 hours of clinical observation under the supervision of an athletic trainer.
Completion of a Bachelor's degree (2.85 cumulative GPA recommended) from a regionally-accredited American college or university.

Completion of all seven prerequisite courses prior to matriculation with required prerequisite GPA of 2.85.

Official GRE scores

Two letters of recommendation. (One letter must be from a college or university professor and one letter must be from an athletic trainer.)

Applicants must also meet the MAT Program's Technical Standards in order to be considered for the Program.

Qualified applicants will be invited to visit the Athletic Training Program for an interview.
