Since this Public Relations degree program began in 1947 at Boston University as the world’s first university-based degree program in public relations, graduates of this MS degree program have advanced into employment in myriad fields, including corporate, nonprofit, public affairs, and media-based communication. The program effectively incorporates theory, research, and practice to provide a deeper understanding of media relations, intercultural affairs, digital expression, ethics and crisis communication, and campaign strategy. Additionally, this graduate degree program offers a wide array of methodological and practical-based tactics for building complex messages and efforts on interpersonal, group, and public scales. As has been proven time and again during the past 70 years, students graduating from this MS degree program will have the knowledge and tools to compete with the most elite communicators and will be armed with talents on how to influence public opinion, develop relationships in the public and private sectors, design effective campaigns, and use innovation to solve complex and critical problems.

Learning Outcomes

Develop advanced skills and competencies based upon the science beneath the art of public relations.

Develop a detailed understanding about various business and financial strategies necessary for success in the public relations industry.

Demonstrate an advanced understanding about the role played by theory, research, strategic planning, action, and evaluation in the public relations process, including practical application via internship and PRLab experiences.

Demonstrate refined understanding of media relations for both traditional print/broadcast media as well as for emerging social/digital media.

Develop a scholarly and advanced professional sense of communication effectiveness in terms of both written and oral communication.
