Through hands-on work, with the Water Resources Science program at the University of Minnesota, you'll grow to understand aquatic ecosystems and their social dimensions. Learn about the public policy and legal frameworks of protecting water resources.

Key Features

Based on the shores of Lake Superior, the University of Minnesota- Duluth is home to outstanding water research facilities such as the Large Lakes Observatory (LLO) and the Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI). With approximately 11,000 students, the Duluth campus provides an alternative to both large research universities and small liberal arts colleges for many students.

The goal of the program is to produce scientists with strong technical skills in disciplines relevant to water resources and a broad understanding of 1) the hydrologic cycle and associated ecosystems, 2) the interconnectedness of the sciences involved in managing aquatic resources, and 3) the interplay between the biophysical sciences and social sciences in developing and implementing public policies related to water.

A Bachelor's degree, preferably in a physical, chemical, biological, or environmental science or engineering program

Undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or better (on a 4.0 grading scale). However, consideration will be given to competitive applications with a lower GPA when student circumstances warrant.

Personal Statement should be a maximum of 2 pages and include your general and specific research interests, career goals, and the faculty you are interested in working with (having as an advisor).

Diversity Statement should be 1-2 pages and highlight your distinct experiences concerning diversity and equity. This statement is useful for potential scholarships.

Letters of recommendation should come from current or former professors who can assess your potential for graduate work. 3 letters are required.
