With flexible opportunities to focus your coursework in a particular sub-field of English or take courses across sub-fields (e.g., composition and rhetoric, creative writing, English education and pedagogy, linguistics, literature, technical and professional writing) as well as in the College of Education, you will deepen your English content knowledge and reflective skills as a professional educator.The Secondary Education - English program at Missouri State University is not designed to serve the needs of prospective students who want to or do teach English in countries other than the United States. Those prospective applicants should explore our department’s Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages programs.

We offer many opportunities to:

Choose coursework and develop research projects to meet your specific educational and professional needs and goals through individualized mentoring and advising
Take courses that best fit your schedule in the evenings, summers, and/or on-line
Learn about and join the latest research-based conversations in the field of English and literacy education
Develop the capacity to assume literacy leadership roles in your school, district, or broader academic communities
Meet and collaborate with other students who, like you, are passionate about English teaching, adolescents, and professional learning
Teach at the college level through a graduate assistantship
Add a TESOL certificate to your course work and learn to teach English to speakers of other languages. TESOL specialists work in schools, universities, community colleges and other educational, business or nonprofit environments.
