Key Features

The ASL,English Interpreting - General Practitioner program at University of North Florida consists of 30 credit hours that include courses in specialized settings (i.e., healthcare, mental health, legal, DeafBlind), mentoring, research, service learning, and intercultural contexts. The General Practitioner concentration is offered via distance learning (no need to relocate). The master's program is developed in accordance with current spoken and signed language research and strives to provide students a global perspective on the interpreting profession, a foundation in interpreting studies literature, and a growth mindset for lifelong learning and skills development.

The mission of the General Practitioner concentration within the MS Degree in ASL/English Interpreting is to provide pre-and post-certified students with specialized skill development, a foundation in interpreting studies literature, and a growth mindset for lifelong learning and skills development. With a curriculum developed in accordance with current spoken and signed language research, our goal is to bring students closer to national certification, or if already certified, to advance the use of ASL and English in specialized settings that include mental health, medical, and legal arenas. We aspire to prepare students who consistently demonstrate interpersonal skills that reflect unconditional positive regard for all participants in the interpreting process and professional dispositions that embrace diversity, respect, equity, and equality of opportunity among the diverse language and cultural groups of the community.

An AS/AA degree in Interpreting OR a Bachelor's degree in a related field plus national certification AND permission of program director.

A 3.0 GPA during the last 60 hours in the first baccalaureate program and competitive GRE scores in Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Reasoning (specific score threshold is not published)
