About the Program
Linguistics: With five faculty members in linguistics, The University of North Carolina at Charlotte has an especially broad list of linguistics graduate courses that apply linguistic theory to composition and second-language instruction and to the study of oral communication and texts.
Literature: Members of the UNC Charlotte literature faculty conduct research on British, American, and post-colonial literatures written in English; their research examines both traditional literary figures and contemporary writers whose work is expanding the literary canon. In addition, the Department of English offers one of the largest and most influential Children’s Literature faculties in the United States.
Writing: UNC Charlotte’s writing faculty conduct research and teach courses in creative writing, rhetorical theory, composition theory, and professional/technical writing. The University is a site of the National Writing Project and writing faculty serve as writing consultants nationally and internationally.

- Three academic letters of recommendation (preferably from instructors who can address the student’s writing achievements and potential)
- Statement of purpose (750 words maximum) tailored to the dual degree program, addressing whether the student is applying in poetry or fiction, their interests in writing and ambitions, their background and reasons for applying for this program, and how they are suited to handle an intensive program with an accelerated pace
