Three-Day Residential Institutes Required for Online Counseling Students
NSU Counseling students in the Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling concentrations in the online format have the benefit of participating in two on-campus Residential Institutes (RI). Each RI is designed to enhance your counselor training and skill development through three days of in-person instructional engagement at an NSU campus. RIs involve face-to-face simulated counseling practice, personalized faculty feedback, group class activities, and a focus on professional counseling competencies to maximize your academic and professional success.
- Attendance is required for all M.S. in Counseling students in the CMHC and School Counseling concentrations in the online format
- Held Friday through Sunday
- Located at NSU Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus or NSU Regional Campus in Orlando
- First RI is part of PYCL 0511: Introduction to Counseling Techniques, typically taken in 2nd program semester
- Second RI is part of PYCL 0635: Group Theory and Practice, typically taken in 3rd - 6th semester (effective Fall 2026 for CMHC).

General requirements
- A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution is required, with official transcripts or an agency evaluation for foreign degrees.
- A degree in psychology, education, behavioral science, social work, or a related field is preferred, or applicants must demonstrate counseling aptitude through professional, volunteer, or research experience.
- Applicants must have a 2.5+ GPA in the last 60 undergraduate hours, a 3.0+ master’s GPA, a GRE score of 300+, or comparable academic indicators.
- An interview is required for admission to the program.
