Overview

Through coursework and internship experiences, students in the Special Education General Studies programme of Rutgers University learn to address the instructional needs of students with mild and moderate cognitive disabilities. An 18-credit special education core is required of all students. This core develops competencies in the assessment and remediation of students with learning disabilities, collaborative teaching/consultation skills, and knowledge about New Jersey special education law.

The programme does not include coursework leading to teacher certification in special education. Students with a bachelor’s degree who are interested in initial teacher certification in special education should contact the Office of Student and Academic Services.

Careers

Students exiting the Ed.M. in Special Education programme who have teacher certification often go on to pursue roles as special education teachers, special education consultants, or curriculum development specialists. Other opportunities may include roles as early intervention specialists, student tutors, or advocates, advisors, or consultants in the private, nonprofit, and government sectors.

Programme Structure

Curriculum:

Students enrolled in the Ed.M. in Special Education programme will learn the foundational principles of special education, how to identify and assess student learning disabilities, and to execute a plan to address and meet the instructional needs of students with mild and moderate cognitive disabilities.

Required coursework from the departments of Educational Statistics, Measurement, and Evaluation and Learning, Cognition, and Development will also equip graduates of the programme with knowledge and skills in psychometric theory, statistical methods, the biological bases of behavior, and the psychology of learning.
