Program Description

The Department of History at the University of California, Riverside offers two courses of study: History and Public History. Students in the History program have the option of completing the degree via Thesis (Plan I) or Comprehensive Exam (Plan II). Students in Public History must complete the thesis.

Career Opportunities

Many students planning graduate work find history an excellent preparation for professional schools such as law and business administration. For those planning a legal career, a strong background in Western institutions and values can be obtained in a variety of courses in the department. And, of course, a major in history prepares the student for graduate study in this field as well as a broad range of general careers in business, government work and foreign affairs that ask for written and verbal skills developed in the major.

General requirements

A bachelor's degree, or its equivalent, from an accredited institution. The degree must represent the completion of a program equivalent in subject matter and scholarship to that offered by the University of California.

A minimum of a 3.0 undergraduate GPA or B-equivalent (if GPA is not on a 4.0 scale). We recommend that you check with the graduate program as they may have a higher standard for their GPA requirements. If your GPA is below this, follow up with the graduate program you are interested. Applications are reviewed in their entirety and the program can look at your other components and advise you on potential admission.
