Overview
What you will learn
The Curatorial Practices in the Public Sphere MA program at University of Southern California features courses that focus on new developments in the scholarship and theory of contemporary art and courses that emphasize research and the conception and realization of exhibitions as practices. Course highlights include the Curatorial Practicum, a multi-term laboratory of exhibition-making and theory in relation to the public sphere. Students work collaboratively to conceptualize, research and organize a culminating project.
This includes mounting a public exhibition and presenting a connected publication and programming in Los Angeles. In a Master's Thesis, students develop individual, original research on a topic in contemporary art with the guidance of faculty.
The MA Curatorial Practices and the Public Sphere offered at University of Southern California aims to bring students to a high level of understanding of the history and theory of curatorial practices, with attention paid to questions of how curating activates art in relation to a range of publics. The seminars and the Roski Talks/Graduate Lecture Series address theories and histories of art and performance, and focus on theories of social practice, the public sphere, what constitutes art’s publics, and how curatorial practice can address and engage various different kinds of audience.
