Overview

We seek to provide a deep, critical, and theoretically-informed reading of folklore scholarship from the seventeenth century through the present. We urge students to develop a particular field of expertise in folkloristics.

At the same time, we advise our graduate students to develop strong grounding in another discipline or multidisciplinary perspective, such as race and ethnic studies, performance studies, science studies, rhetoric, narrative theory, ethnomusicology, materiality, women's and queer theory, and others, in order to bring new perspectives to their work in folkloristics.

Learning outcomes

The Folklore Program at University of California, Berkeley is a creative and international center for scholarship and academic training that focuses on the relationship between traditionality and modernity in contemporary research and social life, the historical emergence of traditional cultural forms, and the importance of tradition in shaping political and social projects. It has become a key locus of efforts to scrutinize Eurocentric genealogies of folkloristics and create alternatives.

Programme Structure

The M.A. in Folklore requires a minimum of 20 units of coursework, of which at least three four- unit courses must be graduate level, and an M.A. thesis based upon fieldwork or some other original, in-depth research project.

During their first year of study, students take the core seminar, Folklore 262A-262B, Theories of Traditionality and Modernity.

Students are also required to take Anthropology 160 AC, The Forms of Folklore, which provides an overview of folklore and folkloristics, if they have not already taken a course providing an overview of the field, or they may be advised to take a related Anthropology 289 with readings and exercises appropriate to graduate- level study.

A graduate methodology course is also required for M.A. students, taken in an area relating to student's proposed thesis research.
