Each year, the Hispanic Languages and Literatures program at University of Pittsburgh consistently attracts a diverse, international, and highly competitive applicant pool.

Key Features
They support related work in other Pitt programs, centers, and departments. These include the Center for Latin American Studies, the Global Studies Center, the Humanities Center, and Pitt programs in Cultural Studies; Film Studies; Gender, Sexuality, & Women's Studies; Hispanic Linguistics; and West European Studies.
The breadth of fields covered by the faculty spans a vast array of topics, genres, regions, approaches, and historical periods. The department’s strengths are in the areas of Latin American literature and cultural theory, with special depth in race, ethnicity, gender, postcolonial studies, performance studies, transpacific/transatlantic studies, feminism, film, and genetic criticism.
Additionally, the teaching and research interests cover select aspects of the literature and cultural production of the Iberian Peninsula, and of the former colonies of Spain and Portugal in Africa.
The department has become noted in recent years for its international conferences, symposia, and workshops, which promote discussion of issues and questions involving cultural diversity, cross-disciplinary encounters, and critical thinking as a basis for research.

Other requirements
General requirements
- Students are expected to hold a BA or MA or an equivalent degree in Latin American literatures, comparative literature, cultural studies, or a related field (other literatures, Latin American-focused major or MA specialization), and to be fluent in Spanish and English.
- In addition to completed forms, applicants are required to submit a fee of U.S. $75, a brief (2–3 single-spaced page maximum) statement of academic interests, three (3) letters of recommendation, unofficial transcripts of all post-secondary academic work, and official translations if documents are not already in English.
- Applicants for the graduate program must submit a sample of written work, at least 15–20 pages in length, in Spanish, Portuguese, or English. If the paper submitted is in English, we ask that a 3-5 page text in Spanish also be submitted.
